CHAPTER 28

Though strongly inclined to take his destiny in his own hands, for now Justin saw no other course but to defer to fate’s initiative in his life. Justin had fears and dreams, but little power, for now, to change the course of events. At all costs, he must not repeat his tragic blunder in Bhū-loka. He could not bear to see more innocent people suffer, when he might have had the power to rescue them. Whatever malign forces might be stalking him, and, God forbid, his family, he must do all in his power to acquire greater power, so that he might engage it in the defense of all he knew to be good and true. Beyond this, he saw no present options, no existential electives.

It was Saturday, the night of the Fall Dance. As Justin and Luke dressed for the event, Luke quietly mentioned that he would leave the dance early. He was going to meet someone. Justin looked at Luke and Luke nodded. Both understood that Luke was going to meet Sara. Both understood that if Luke did not explicitly mention Sara, White Hall rules did not require Justin to report Luke to the authorities.

But Justin could not stay silent when he felt his friend might be in real danger. As they walked to the dance on the far side of campus, Justin said, “A few days ago, a girl who shall remain unnamed said that when she met her special friend, she felt that her friend knew everything about her. This worries me, Luke. What if that unnamed girl is under her friend’s control?”

“If that’s the case,” Luke said, “then I want to help that girl.”

“But Luke, what if her friend really is a witch?”

“Do you think it appropriate to call her a witch,” Luke said, “when we don’t really know anything about her?”

“It may not be appropriate, but is everyone really making this up about how dangerous she is? The unnamed girl herself admitted that she’s dangerous, at least when provoked. Surely, you don’t doubt her account. Maybe there are good and bad witches, but this friend really sounds like a witch. Luke, this is too dangerous at many levels.”

As they approached the dance hall, Luke paused and stepped to the side to let other students pass. Justin joined him. Luke sighed. “Justin, I understand your concern. But when I think of that girl, I just know I have to see her again. Even my parents agree, and they are not normally foolish.”

“Luke,” Justin insisted, “I would never think your parents or you are foolish. But you recall that day I saw the girl known as the witch. Well, she speaks in the same intelligent, plausible, refined way. What if both girls are…into the same things? I know there’s a connection.” Justin turned his back to the sidewalk leading to the dance hall. None of the passing students could see his tense expression or hear his impassioned appeal to Luke. “Don’t take chances. Maybe it’s all a bunch of superstitious nonsense, and maybe it’s not.
